Youth Pond Hockey League

11 week season for Prenovice to Junior levels

Give yourself the edge!

Join us for the best 3 on 3 action in Montreal!

Since we opened in 1998, we have made 3 on 3 hockey our priority. Our youth league is the highlight of our year, where we spend the spring hosting teams from Prenovice to Junior levels every week!

Our expertise in running an efficient and professional league makes the YPHL the place to be from April to June!

What makes 3 on 3 hockey so unique?

Speed and scoring!

3 on 3 hockey gives all players the chance to constantly be involved in the game. No matter what position you play, you’ll be on your toes your whole shift!

Since our 3 on 3 rinks are smaller than traditional ice surfaces, there are more chances to score with the game moving at a faster pace. Games are packed with end-to-end action that will be sure to keep you on the edge of your seat!

Each player can work on their own skill when they get that much time with the puck! The consistent action on the net makes this a great way for goalies to develop their game too.

WHY choose the YPHL at Excellent Ice Kirkland?

3 on 3 is our specialty!

A place for everyone

We accept teams from Prenovice to Junior so that players big and small have the chance to play!

Each age category is divided into several tiers, and our staff assess all teams to balance the groups as evenly as possible. That way, teams are challenged while also playing against their peers.

Professional Staff

We have years of experience under our belt in running a busy league! Schedules and standings are available online, and our League Managers communicate regularly with team captains to make sure the season runs smoothly. Our League Supervisors on site on game days are available to answer questions, distribute pinnies, check-in players, and much more! Plus, all games are officiated by qualified referees.

Focus on FUN!

We know the best part about spring hockey is getting to hang with your friends and play for love of the sport! We want our players to leave with a smile on their face and great memories to cap off their season.

We provide 11 sets of jerseys and socks to each team branded with our Excellent Ice logo. Each jersey is uniquely numbered to identify each player.

All players must wear their team uniform for their game.

If there is a colour conflict between opposing teams, our League Supervisor will lend pinnies to one team for the game.

Managers must register their team in the league.

Managers will have to register their team online in two steps:

  1. Create a team in our online registration system
(Note that registration is only confirmed once payment is completed in full)
  2. Once the team is registered, managers will then need to register their own child (if applicable) onto the team

The team manager is the person who registers the team. They will be the contact person between Excellent Ice Kirkland and the team.

The manager is required to pay the full amount at time of registration. We recommend that the manager requests e-transfers from all of the players for their portion of the team payment.

After the team is registered, each player will need to add themselves to the team roster. See the video below about how to register online!

We recommend that a team have a maximum of nine skaters and one goalie. (The default is set to 14 to allow for spares)

If you want to join the YPHL as a Pre-Novice player, but don’t have a team, we’ve got you covered!

For Pre-Novice players registering individually without an assigned team, we will create teams of free agents.

To sign up as a free agent on our registration site, please choose the Pre-Novice team, enter the password when prompted, answer all required fields and pay the $375 registration fee at checkout.

Please note that there is a $75 cancellation fee to withdraw your registration as a free agent within 15 business days prior to the start of the league (March 25, 2023)

DISCIPLINE AND SUSPENSIONS

  1. BODYCHECKING IS NOT PERMITTED.
  2. FIGHTING WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. There is a zero tolerance policy for fighting. Fighting will result in a minimum 5 game suspension with the possiblility of expulsion from the league with no reimbursement. All infractions are subject to the league coordinator’s discretion. ANY FURTHER OFF-ICE FIGHTING WILL BE HANDLED BY THE POLICE.
  3. A team whose members are involved in three fights or more will be removed from the league with no reimbursement.

  5. SUSPENSIONS:
During game play: an effort will be made to prevent fighting between teams. At the first instance of a fight, whether it is gloves dropped, pushing in the corner, or general ‘yapping’, penalities will be assessed. In addition, players who do participate in a fight will be removed from a game and will automatically result in a 5 game suspension (even if no punches were thrown).
If a player is involved in an incident, a suspension will be issued

  8. A spare that is not a regular player on any YPHL team and is suspended for any reason during the course of the season will be barred from playing any more games for the remainder of the season.
  9. Teams are not permitted to bring alcoholic beverages or food into the building.

GAME PLAY

  1. Please ensure that your team is ready for the start of each game, as the puck will be dropped on time. Once the Zamboni has resurfaced the ice, there will be a 3 minute warm-up, after which the game will commence. Late teams will be penalized one penalty shot for every 2 minutes that they are late.
  2. Late players may enter a game up to the end of the 2nd period. This rule applies to regular players only, not spares. SPARES CANNOT BE TAKEN FROM OTHER TEAMS IN THE SAME DIVISION from the game prior or from another rink – The spare must be from the original roster!
  3. Line changes are permitted on the fly, after a goal, penalty or injury only for the Novice 1 to Junior divisions. Pulling a goalie is not considered a line change. If the play is stopped for an injured player, that player must leave the ice. ** For Pre-Novice, Novice 4, 3 & 2, changes will be timed and indicated by the buzzer**
  4. There will be NO off-side calls for the Pre-Novice and Novice divisions.
  5. Body-checking is NOT PERMITTED.

  7. Three (3) minor penalties will result in an expulsion from the game.
  8. A player receiving a minor penalty will be sent off the ice for one shift.
  9. No penalty shots will be awarded for coincidental minor penalties. The players involved in the altercation will be sent off the ice for one shift.
  10. If no goal is scored after a penalty shot, the face off will be in the offending team zone.
  11. If the puck hits the goalie mask, the play is stopped and the face off is in the zone.
  12. Intentional delay of game in the last two minutes will result in a penalty shot. (i.e.: late changes, putting too many players on the ice, faking an injury, shooting the puck over the boards, purposely dislodging the net, goalie taking off his mask, coach calling team to the bench etc.)
  13. Standing tie-breakers: wins, plus/minus, goals for, head-to-head records, plus/minus in head-to-head games, coin toss.
  14. Tied games at the end of regulation will be settled by a best -of-three shootout. A player may not shoot twice until each player on the team (except goalie) has shot once. Ejected players may not participate in the shootout. If the score is still tied after three shooters, the shootout will then be sudden-death.

All participants accept the inherent risk involved in playing competitive ice hockey. All participants must wear proper protective equipment each game. Failure to do so exposes players to possible injury, and the potential for not being allowed to play the game.

**Neck guards are mandatory for all levels.**
*** A helmet with a minimum full cage must be worn at all times for PreNovice to Midget. Junior level must have a helmet with half visor minimum. ***

Frequently Asked Questions

The minimum is 4 players (3 players + 1 goalie or 4 skaters). All players (regular and call-ups) must be registered onto the team by the March 19th, 2023 deadline.

Your team will be placed in a tier according to the entire team’s performance during the exhibition period. If your double-letter players are “game changers,” your team will be placed at a higher level accordingly.

Please note that if your team’s performance is significantly different than other teams in your tier following the exhibition period, Excellent Ice may move you to a different tier even after the regular season has started.

No. Call-ups must be of a similar calibre to the average of the team. Excellent Ice reserves the right to refuse call-ups if they are significantly stronger than the rest of the team.

Players can play UP ↑ an age category, but they CANNOT play down 🚫↓. For instance, an Atom player can play Peewee, but a Peewee player cannot play Atom.

However, if they are playing up a category, they must be playing for a team of similar calibre. E.g. an Atom BB player cannot play for a Peewee C team.

No, an older category player cannot play on a team in a younger category.

If you really want an older player on your team, the whole team would have to play up a category, so in this example your team could play Atom, even if they are mostly Novice-aged.

Yes, no problem! 👍

However, it is up to the player to manage their schedule, as it is highly likely that at some point in the season there will be a schedule conflict between the teams. We cannot reschedule games due to a player’s absence.

We make every effort to balance tiers during the exhibition period to make sure tiers are competitive. As with any sport, both wins and losses are to be expected during the season.

If there is a noticeable disparity between your team and the rest of its tier, to the point where it is affecting morale in either your team or the other teams, we may choose to move you to another tier during the season to maintain a competitive field of play.

Note that since 3 on 3 hockey is higher scoring, a larger score differential is not uncommon.

For example, we would not move a team if it were experiencing a losing streak of 3-5 goals for much of the season, but spent a lot of time touching the puck and making advances. However, if a team is consistently beating every other team by 12+ goals and fully dominating the game, it could get moved up to another tier (or even age category) to better reflect their level of play. This is up to the league supervisors’ discretion.

We allow one coach/manager and a maximum of one other assistant coach/manager behind the bench, aside from players. In this context, a coach/manager is any parent or caretaker aged 18 years or older.

If there is no designated coach/manager on a team, we ask that parents rotate behind the bench to oversee their team’s games.

No more than two accompanying adults will be allowed behind the bench for any game. We thank all parents for their cooperation.

One adult (aged 18+) must be behind the bench at all times for Prenovice to Midget teams during games.

Managers/coaches are not required for Junior teams, but if they choose to have them, the same conditions apply.

Sorry, we cannot provide goaltenders or players to registered teams.

We understand that finding a goalie may be difficult, so we suggest reaching out to your child’s teammates, friends, etc. You can also check out our Facebook page to connect with other players in your age category to try to complete your team!

No, we do not take schedule requests for games.

We take free agent registration for Pre-Novice up to Peewee age categories.

If you are a Bantam or Junior player looking for a team, we suggest you comment our Facebook page to connect with other players.

Any registration received after the March 19 deadline will be placed on a waitlist. One of our staff members will contact you after that date if we are able to accommodate your team registration. (Please make sure the email address in your account is up to date.)

We have a zero tolerance policy in our league. We will not tolerate any harassment of players, coaches, officials or staff. This applies to players as well as coaches and spectators.

Anyone who commits hurtful acts on our premises may face suspension or expulsion from the league or facility. There is no refund for games missed due to such behaviour.

Remember: We all have to go to work or school in the morning! The YPHL is a fun league, and we do everything we can to keep it that way!

We would be happy to help! Please email Lori at lori@excellentice-kirkland.com or Brent at bsabino@excellentice-kirkland.com for more information, or you can call us at 514-695-4368.
